MEMORIAL STAINED GLASS WINDOWS

Anchor Cross – Robert & Willie Clifford

Robert Clifford and his wife Willie moved their membership to Mt. Zion as adults with grown children. However, Doc’s roots here run deep. As a 7yr old boy he would ride his horse to the church each Sunday to light the fire that warmed the church as well as perform any necessary janitorial duties. He earned 2 bits each Sunday. Doc’s service to his country in the Navy and his career in veterinarian medicine took him away from his childhood home, but in the years since his return to Mt. Zion he has been instrumental in the life of the church.
Originally a symbol of hope in general, the anchor takes on in this way a much higher meaning: that of hope based on the Cross of Christ. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek." (Hebrews 6:19-20)

ChiRo/Icthus – Charles and Margaret Dyar
The Chi-Rho (pronounced "KEE-roe") is a Christian symbol consisting of the intersection of the capital Greek letters Chi (×) and Rho (Ñ), which are the first two letters of "Christ" in Greek (×ÑÉÓÔÏÓ, Christos).
The fish is thought to have been chosen by the early Christians for several reasons:
• the Greek word for fish (ICHTUS), works nicely as an acrostic for "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior"
• the fish would not be an obvious Christian symbol to persecutors
• Jesus' ministry is associated with fish:
he chose several fishermen to be his disciples and declared he would make them "fishers of men."
It is said that during the persecution of the early church, a Christian meeting someone new would draw a single arc in the sand. If the other person was a Christian, he or she would complete the drawing of a fish with a second arc. If the second person was not a Christian,
the ambiguity of the half-symbol would not reveal the first person as a Christian.

Easter lily – The Family of Aline & Louis Barnett
Mr. Louis and Aline Barnett were members of Mt. Zion since 1950, raising their two daughters and one son in the church. Serving together faithfully for decades, after Louis’ death, Mrs. Aline continued to work tirelessly as church secretary and treasurer for many years. She taught Sunday School, led the women’s group, oversaw the church bazaar and served cookies and kool-aid to hundreds of children during decades of vbs. For many, the beautiful trumpet-shaped white flowers symbolize purity, virtue, innocence, hope and life—the spiritual essence of Easter

   Dogwood – The McJimsey Family
Jack and Abbie McJimsey joined Mt. Zion 1947 as a young married couple. Their daughter, DeeLee was raised here and worships here today. Mr. Jack served as a trustee for many years making sure the facilities were well cared for and searching out each mysterious gas leak. Mrs. Abbie has ministered to her brothers and sisters here in many ways. She is a faithful friend to shut –ins and those in nursing homes. Mrs. Abbie continues to give to all of us each Sunday with her offering of fresh flowers for the altar. She wanders far and wide gathering from neighbors yards, ditches or where ever she may find the perfect posy for the weeks offering. Jack and Abbie shared a love of nature which makes the Dogwood symbol a perfect tribute to their family. Apparently, Jack wasn’t the kind of man to go out and buy a girl flowers, or even pick them from what I gathered. But one day, Mr. Jack came home bearing gifts. He had gone into the woods and cut Mrs. Abbie a limb from a dogwood tree that was in full bloom. Mrs. Abbie was touched by the gift, but felt almost sacrilegious to have a limb cut from the legendary dogwood.

Legend says that a flowering dogwood tree was used to make the cross of the crucifixion and as a result it now grows as a living memory of the event

Holy Spirit Dove – Wanda Lawless
Mother of James David Lawless, Wanda could always be counted on to prepare mountains of food to take on the annual mission trip. No trip was complete without several of her goodies to nourish those serving. Wanda always donated her skill in the kitchen to every ministry from family life to bible school. All four Gospel accounts refer to the baptism of Jesus by John at the Jordan river (Matthew 3:16; Mark 1:10; Luke 3:22; John 1:32). The Luke account says “And the Holy Spirit came down in a bodily shape, like a dove on Him.” Because the Holy Spirit is just that—spirit—He is not visible to us. This occasion, however, was a real visible appearance, and was doubtless seen by the people. The dove is an emblem of purity and harmlessness (Matthew 10:16), and the form of the dove was assumed on this occasion to signify that the Spirit with which Jesus would be endowed would be one of purity and innocence.

Alpha & Omega – Linn Horton
A long time member of the community, Linn was raised in the Christian Church,
but had not had a church home in many years.
He joined Mt. Zion in 1998 and became an active member of the congregation.
He vowed to never serve on a committee, saying, it took too long to get stuff done.
He did, however, serve tirelessly building bible school props and other projects, trimming trees, fixing signs and serving in many other ways. He was a man who needed to see things through from start to finish.
A Savior, who from the cross would cry out “It is finished” spoke directly to the heart of a man like Linn.
"I am the first and the last" (Isa. 44:6)
"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." (Rev 1:8, NIV)

Communion Cross – The children & grandchildren of George and Nancy Hill
The Communion Cross is a symbol of the freely-made decision to love and serve God.
During the Last Supper, Jesus instructed his disciples to fulfill a rite in memory of Him.
There are many interpretations of what this means for Christians today, and how the rite should be observed. But the elements are essentially the same: a chalice, bread (leavened or unleavened) - the body of Christ, and wine - the blood of Christ.

Open Bible with Rose – Frances Sanders
A Book symbolizes the Bible or how ones life is recognized. An open book  can be compared to a person with an open heart and that their thoughts and feelings were open to the world and God. The Rose symbolizes love. It has been known to be the queen of flowers due to its fragrance and beauty.

Nativity Star – George & Ida Tiller, Robert & Mabel Clifford
Parents and Grandparents of “Doc” Clifford – Founding Members of Mt. Zion. Robert Clifford saw every board nailed and every brick laid of the church we worship in today. Mrs. Mabel held most every position in the church at some point during her membership here – most notedly as church treasurer – where she was known for making sure everyone did their part to meet the needs of the congregation.
The four-pointed star symbol in Christianity is usually styled to resemble a cross. Also known as the Star of Bethlehem or natal star, this star represents both Jesus' birth and the purpose for which he was born.
I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. (Numbers 24:17, NIV)

United Methodist Cross and Flame– all past, present and future members
The Cross and Flame emblem is a powerful reminder
of who and Whose we are as United Methodists.
The history and significance of the Cross and Flame
emblem are as rich and diverse as The United Methodist Church.
It relates The United Methodist church to God
through Christ (cross) and the Holy Spirit (flame).
The flame is a reminder of Pentecost when witnesses were unified
by the power of the Holy Spirit and saw tongues, as of fire" (Acts 2:3)
